Protective eye and face equipment shall be required where there is a reasonable probability of injury that can be prevented by such equipment. In such cases, employers shall make conveniently available a type of protector suitable for the work to be preformed, and employees shall use such protectors. Suitable eye protectors shall be provided where machines or operations present the hazard of flying objects, glare, liquids, injurious radiation, or a combination of these hazards

“Each day about 2000 U.S. workers have a job-related eye injury that requires medical treatment. About one third of the injuries are treated in hospital emergency departments and more than 100 of these injuries result in one or more days of lost work.”

The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that almost 70% of the eye injuries studied occurred from falling or flying objects, or sparks striking the eye.  The best ways to prevent eye injuries are to always be wearing appropriate eye protection.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that approximately three out of every 5 workers injured were either not wearing eye protection at the time of the accident or wearing the worn kind of protection for the job.
